In recent years, obesity has taken center stage as one of our time's leading health issues. As a single practitioner, I grew frustrated at my inability to make a difference. However, through that frustration, came a vision for population-based medicine: to reach out to the masses with a message that would impact thousands of lives.
Many people do not have the resources or knowledge to fight obesity, and things get worse each day. Desperation sets in, and we become victims of scams, frauds, "junk science" and false authorities looking for their dollar. The anxiety increases as type-2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes, hypertension, cancer, and obesity in our children becomes more and more prevalent. Something has to be done!
The numbers are staggering. With approximately 65% of the United States population being overweight or obese, there are 195,000,000 people in need and less than 300 obesity specialists to help. If you add other practitioners – from dieticians, to physicians, to nurses practitioners, to counsellors – it is still clear we are grossly outnumbered. Pushing beyond the borders of the United States to Europe and especially Asia, the future is bleak with our current path.
